The Great Awakening

From before the coming of the Christ, up until our own times, there have always been those who foresaw a cataclysmic danger - not only to human civilization, but the certain destruction of our planet itself.
The solution they proffer never varies: Discontinue all productive work immediately; destroy or discard the accumulated capital that that makes this work possible - the more extreme will further advocate a mass suicide or genocide, and always for the same purpose; To appease or offer sacrifice to forces offended by modernity, and thus restore balance to the cosmos - in the case of those who intend to survive the catastrophe, a new golden age is envisioned where the evils created by the wicked will not intrude on the believer's new Eden.
Or perhaps all will perish in the coming conflagration - never fear; balance will still be restored in the end, the universe will somehow, find equilibrium, with or without the rest of us.
Human beings are, whether by adaptation or design, uniquely suited to live on the Earth;the Earth,in turn, to human habitation. The ecology of this planet has been habitable by man for millennia, despite, if not because of, our long residence here.Whatever changes we may make in the future, for good or for ill, this planet will remain habitable, and we shall continue to inhabit it,together.
Salvation will not come as a result of the deaths of unbelievers, nor will supernatural forces intervene to usher in paradise.
This matter will finally end as every Awakening has always ended.
The believers will destroy all of the means of productivity at their disposal, and, either retire to await their vindication - or turn against those who remain deaf to proselytization, beating their ploughshares into swords in a desperate bid to appease their god by the sacrifice of her doubters....
Regardless of their tactics, or the outcome of their struggle, they are doomed.
